Nokia e61 Smartphone

Nokia has introduced the Nokia e61 Smartphone device based on the Symbian OS that extends enterprise collaboration tools and Voice Over IP capability to a hand-held Smartphone device. The e61 is a dual-mode phone which has both cellular and wireless LAN capabilities in a sleek compact form factor. In this overview, I'll take you through some of the key capabilities.

The Nokia e61 runs RIM's Blackberry software that delivers your Lotus Notes mail directly to the device. The main screen displays the first couple of messages in your inbox, just scroll to this region of the screen and press down on the joystick navigation device to display your inbox. You can access your mail using the envelope icon or the keyboard envelope"hot key" .

With Nokia's PC synch capability, it's easy to synchronize the contacts stored in your local Notes Address Book (NAB) to the Nokia contact list. Just press the hot key under Contacts from the main screen to display all your contacts. Type in the first few letters of the last name and you will get to the person your looking for with a minimum of key strokes. To make a call, just select the person in the list and press the "call" key.

You can also run Lotus Mobile Connect software that allows you to
securely connect to your corporate network giving you access to your intranet and other web-based applications. I use mobile connect to access the IBM intranet that we call "W3". The Nokia e61 has a high-resolution browser that makes it feasible to navigate full-size web pages pretty easily.

And last but not least, the e61 supports ST 7.5.1 mobile client. The mobile ST client comes free with your Sametime desktop client license and runs on the Nokia e61--Blackberry and Windows Mobile platforms are also supported--and keeps you connected to the office when you're on the go. Your buddy list and groups automatically load from the server and the User Interface is intuitive and easy to use...as long as you don't mind typing with your thumbs :=). You can connect to your ST server using Lotus Mobile Connect over your cellular carrier's network or you can access via your wireless LAN. The Nokia phone supports LEAP authentication for wireless LAN access to your corporate network.
